Tech Job Interviews Are Out of Control
Many tech job seekers have experienced the arduous and sometimes ridiculous interview process that seems to be the norm in the industry. From endless coding challenges and whiteboard exercises to bizarre brainteasers and long hours of grilling by multiple interviewers, the tech job interview process can often feel like an interrogation rather than a conversation about one’s skills and experience.
While it’s important for companies to ensure that they are hiring the best candidates for their technical roles, the current state of tech job interviews has gotten out of control. Candidates are often expected to jump through hoops and prove their worth in ways that have little relevance to the actual job they would be performing.
This high-pressure and sometimes dehumanizing interview process can deter qualified candidates from pursuing tech jobs, creating a barrier to entry for diverse talent and perpetuating the lack of diversity in the tech industry.
It’s time for companies to rethink their interview processes and focus on meaningful conversations, practical assessments, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all candidates. Tech job interviews should be a two-way street where both the employer and the candidate can assess if there is a good fit for the role and the company.
Let’s bring some sanity back to tech job interviews and make the process more about finding the right match rather than putting candidates through unnecessary stress and hoops to jump through.
