Peterborough man who strangled woman jailed for 18 months
A Peterborough man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of strangling a woman in a domestic violence incident.
The man, whose name has not been released to protect the identity of the victim, was arrested last year following a report of a physical altercation at a residence in Peterborough. The victim, who was known to the man, was found with visible injuries consistent with being strangled.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence of the man’s history of violence towards the victim, as well as witness testimony supporting the victim’s account of the events leading up to the assault.
In delivering the sentence, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the need to send a message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in the community.
Domestic violence affects millions of people around the world each year, and it is important for victims to know that there are resources available to help them escape dangerous situations and seek justice for their abusers.
