UK and EU sign new deal on small boat crossings
After months of negotiations, the United Kingdom and the European Union have finally reached an agreement on small boat crossings. The deal, which was signed yesterday in Brussels, aims to address the ongoing issue of illegal migration across the English Channel.
Under the new agreement, both parties have committed to increasing cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat human trafficking and smuggling. The UK has also agreed to increase funding for border security measures, while the EU will provide additional resources to support search and rescue operations in the Channel.
Both sides have hailed the deal as a significant step forward in addressing the challenges posed by small boat crossings. “This agreement demonstrates our shared commitment to protecting our borders and ensuring the safety and security of our citizens,” said UK Home Secretary Priti Patel.
The European Commission also welcomed the agreement, stating that it would help to prevent further loss of life at sea and strengthen cooperation on border management. “This is a positive development that will benefit both the UK and the EU,” said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.
The new deal on small boat crossings is expected to come into effect in the coming weeks, with both parties committed to implementing the necessary measures to ensure its success.
