Star Wars game cancelled as EA cuts 670 jobs
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it will be cancelling its upcoming open-world Star Wars game, which was being developed by EA Vancouver. This decision comes as part of a wider restructuring effort that will result in the company cutting around 670 jobs.
The Star Wars game, codenamed “Project Orca,” was originally conceived as a follow-up to the successful Star Wars: Battlefront series. However, EA has now decided to shift its focus towards other projects and will be reallocating resources accordingly.
In a statement, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, “We had been working on this game for some time and had made great progress, but we have decided to move in a different direction. We are committed to delivering high-quality, immersive experiences for our players, and we believe that this decision is in the best interest of both our company and our fans.”
As a result of the restructuring, EA will be consolidating its roles and closing down some of its offices. The company estimates that around 670 jobs will be lost as a result of these changes, but it has stated that it will be providing support and resources for those affected by the layoffs.
Despite the cancellation of “Project Orca,” EA still holds the exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games for the foreseeable future. The company has said that it remains committed to the franchise and that it will continue to explore new opportunities to bring the galaxy far, far away to life in exciting ways.
