My twin died before prom, now we’re helping others go
It was supposed to be the highlight of our high school years – prom night. My twin sister and I had been planning for months, from finding the perfect dresses to deciding on the best hairstyle. But just weeks before the big night, tragedy struck.
My sister was involved in a car accident and passed away. I was devastated, lost without my other half. Prom was the last thing on my mind as I struggled to come to terms with my loss.
As the date of prom approached, I realized that my sister would have wanted me to go and enjoy the night, to honor her memory and celebrate our bond as twins. With the support of our friends and family, I decided to attend prom and dedicate the evening to her.
After prom, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. That’s when I came up with the idea to start a scholarship fund in my sister’s name, to help other students attend prom who may not be able to afford it otherwise. With the help of our community, we were able to raise enough money to send several students to prom that year.
Now, years later, the scholarship fund has grown and we continue to help students in need experience the magic of prom night. It’s a way for me to keep my sister’s memory alive and give back to others in her honor.
Though my sister may not have been able to attend prom that year, her spirit lives on through the smiles and memories of those we help. Prom night will always hold a special place in my heart, a bittersweet reminder of the bond my twin sister and I shared.
