Sell homes of ‘Putin cronies’, says London mayor
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has called for the sale of luxury homes owned by ‘Putin cronies’ in the city. Khan made the statement in response to the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, urging the UK government to take action against individuals with close ties to Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
“We cannot stand by and allow individuals who have profited from their connections to the Russian regime to continue to enjoy the luxury of living in our city while innocent lives are being lost in Ukraine,” Khan said in a press conference.
The Mayor’s office has identified several properties in London that are owned by individuals with links to Putin, including oligarchs and other wealthy associates. Khan is calling for these properties to be seized and sold, with the proceeds going towards humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
Many world leaders have condemned Putin’s actions in Ukraine, with calls for sanctions and other measures to hold Russia accountable. Khan’s call to sell the homes of Putin cronies is just one example of the backlash against those who support the Russian regime.
It remains to be seen what action the UK government will take in response to Khan’s proposal, but the Mayor’s statement has sparked a debate about the role of wealthy Russian individuals in London’s property market.
